About Us

Growing where no grape has grown before…

Pineywoods Vineyard remains proudly family-owned, with an unwavering dedication to sourcing grapes exclusively from the state of Texas. While we endeavor to cultivate as much of our fruit as possible, the unpredictable weather occasionally presents challenges beyond our control.

Our Blanc du Bois vineyard is planted in Sabine County, on a geologic feature called the Sabine Uplift. The acidic clay soils give our region’s wines a distinctive terroir.

Chris & Jordan

Proprietors

Pineywoods Vineyard started as a result of Hurricane Harvey (2017). Chris & Jordan were residing in Houston, and decided living in a giant bayou was not the wisest of choices. Jordan’s family has lived in Sabine County for several generations, so when Jordan suggested they move back to Deep East Texas, Chris said “well then, we are starting a vineyard.” The land was prepped in 2018 and planting was completed in March of 2019.

Chris Cox

Winemaker

Chris first gained interest in wine when she was working as a bartender in college in South Florida. After moving to Texas, she learned more about the agricultural and competition elements through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She learns more every day (mostly through mistakes), and welcomes you to join her on this wine adventure she has embarked on.

Chelsea Jackson-Melton

General Manager

Chelsea’s academic journey led her to Colorado Mesa University, where she earned her Bachelor’s in Business Administration (B.B.A) with a specialization in Hospitality & Tourism.

In the spring of 2022, Chelsea’s path took a unique turn as she immersed herself in the vineyard at Pineywoods. She enthusiastically embraced hands-on involvement, tending to the grapes and nurturing their growth. Since then, she has been an integral part of Pineywoods Vineyard, playing a pivotal role in developing the guest experience.

OUR STORY

Nestled in the heart of Deep East Texas, adjacent to the Toledo Bend Reservoir, lies our Blanc du Bois vineyard – a pioneering endeavor in Sabine County. The vineyard boasts approximately 450 vines on our premises, and we are increasing the land used for viticulture through collaborative efforts with local growers across Sabine County.

At the core of our operations is a deep sense of community pride. As stewards of both Texas and Louisiana agriculture, the winery holds a steadfast commitment to fostering agricultural awareness. Join us on our mission to revitalize the Deep East Texas region through viticulture and viniculture.

Chris Cox, the driving force behind Pineywoods Vineyard, discovered her passion for the wine industry during her undergraduate years at the University of Miami while working in catering services. Her journey continued at Texas A&M, while she was pursuing her Master’s studies and eventually got involved with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Wine Garden, contributing to service and selections. Her commitment to the craft goes beyond the vineyard, as she also holds a successful career as a Marine Geologist during the day.

Jordan Cox, Chris’s husband, complements the duo with his skills as a mechanical engineer. His ingenuity played a crucial role in preparing the land for the vineyard, and he remains the go-to support for all things mechanical, ensuring the smooth operation of Pineywoods Vineyard.

The Pineywoods Vineyard Land holds a special significance as it is family land. The decision to establish the vineyard was solidified when the couple, living in Houston following the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, opted to return to Jordan’s hometown of Hemphill. This marked the inception of their dream – a vineyard that would eventually become Pineywoods Vineyard.

Looking towards the future, Chris and Jordan envision Hemphill as a blossoming area for more varietals and farms. Their focus is not only on producing exceptional wine but also on fostering a lasting community of viticulture in the region. The couple has a profound dedication to the area, and they see Hemphill as a canvas for growth and opportunity.

In line with their plans, Chris and Jordan are under construction of their downtown tasting room and event venue, expanding their footprint in the community. They are also committed to supporting local farmers in their endeavors to cultivate their plots of grapes, contributing to the agricultural and viticultural landscape of the region.

Pineywoods Vineyard is not just a winery; it is a manifestation of passion, vision, and commitment. Chris and Jordan Cox are not only cultivating vines but also sowing the seeds for a vibrant and prosperous future for Hemphill.
